How could a vehicle fail a WOF?

Top 5 Reasons Vehicles Fail Their WOF 🛑

Is your Warrant of Fitness coming up? In New Zealand, nearly 40% of vehicles fail their WoF on the first attempt. Most of these are for simple, preventable issues.

Checking these five things before you head to the workshop can save you a "failed" sticker and a second trip:

1. Lighting and Signaling 💡

The most common reason for a fail is simply a blown bulb.

  • What to check: Have someone stand outside while you test your indicators, headlights (dipped and high beam), brake lights, and even that tiny bulb over your rear registration plate.

2. Tyre Condition 🛞

Your tyres are the only thing connecting you to the road, so inspectors are strict.

  • What to check: The legal minimum tread depth is 1.5mm. Look for uneven wear (which might mean you need an alignment) or any visible cracks and bulges in the sidewalls.

3. Wipers and Windscreen 🌧️

If you can’t see, you aren't safe.

  • What to check: Check your wiper blades for any "smearing" or splitting. For the windscreen, any chip or crack in the "CVP" (the area directly in front of the driver) is an instant fail.

4. Brake Wear 🛑

Brakes account for about 15% of all failures.

  • What to check: While you can’t always see the pads without taking the wheels off, listen for squealing, grinding, or a "spongy" feeling when you hit the pedal. If the handbrake has to be pulled way too high to hold the car, that’s a red flag.

5. Steering and Suspension 🔧

These components take a beating on our roads.

  • What to check: Listen for "clunks" or knocks when driving over bumps or turning the wheel. If the car feels like it’s bouncing or swaying more than usual, your shock absorbers or bushes might be worn out.

Pro Tip: A quick "walk-around" of your car takes 5 minutes but could save you the hassle of a re-check!
